The Used in Concert

Bursting onto the scene with the tense crunch of post-hardcore guitars and singer Bert McCracken's piercing shriek in the early aughts, The Used were stalwarts of the "screamo" sub-genre, drawing comparisons to contemporaries in Thursday, Taking Back Sunday and My Chemical Romance. Always a formidable live act, The Used are as closely aligned with the hard rock acts of the 80s as they are with their post-hardcore brethren, with vocalist McCracken lending his plaintive howl to his bandmates' razor-sharp maelstrom and a full battery of strobe lights. Their latest full-length album Vulnerable featured more overly theatrical flourishes and led with the single "I Come Alive." They supported the album with the Vulnerable Tour 2012 and reissued the album as a two-disc set that included B-sides and rarities, called Vulnerable (II) in March 2013.

The Used are unlikely exports of Orem, Utah, a place not known for hard rock. That didn't stop guitarist Quinn Allman, bassist Jepth Howard, drummer Branden Steineckert and McCracken from playing the local clubs before touring to support their 2002 self-titled debut. Their reputation as a live act saw them punch their ticket for coveted spots on the Warped Tour and Ozzfest. 2004's In Love and Death, which peaked at No. 6 on Billboard's Top 200, announced their arrival to the big leagues, spawning singles, "Take it Away," "All That I've Got" and "I Caught Fire." In 2006, the band replaced longtime drummer Branden Steineckert with Dan Whiteside and released their fifth album Vulnerable through their own label, Dental Records. The band embarked on a series of concerts to support the album that summer. The Used released an EP of new material titled The Ocean of the Sky the following summer. Currently, the band is rumored to be going on tour in 2014, but no official announcements have been made.

The Used are touring on the Rockstar Energy Drink DISRUPT Festival in 2019. The touring festival features unique lineups in each city, including The Used, Thrice, Circa Survive, Sum 41, The Story So Far, Atreyu, Sleeping With Sirens, Andy Black, and more.

  • Shortest concert ever!

by Whitney on 5/21/25House of Blues San Diego - San DiegoRating: 1 out of 5

The Used was a total bust. Not only was it the shortest concert (45 min) they did not provide info that they were playing one album per night, so I went to hear only songs from their fourth album (didn’t even know they had a fourth album) and they didn’t perform an encore, have an opening act, nothing. It was seriously the worst.

  • Not What I Expected

by David B. on 5/19/25House of Blues San Diego - San DiegoRating: 3 out of 5

The band put on a good show. No issue with the band and their performance. I'm a fan of the venue as well. The issue I have is the lack of communication as to what the band was going to be performing. The Used performed their "Lies for the Liars"album in its entirety. One of my least favorite albums. If had known this I would not have attended the show. I thought "25 Anniversary Tour"would be a compilation of their popular songs. I was sadly disappointed.

  • The Wiltern

by Cali Gal on 5/18/25The Wiltern - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

I visited this venue for the first time for a 3 day concert. I was very impressed by the entire staff, everyone was beyond friendly and informative when asked questions. The staff seems to have great communication between different job titles for a smooth flowing venue. Katie one of the supervisors and Warren the security had mentioned their names to me to be recognized. The venue was well kept for the cleanliness and had a lot of room for the bars, merch tables, and setups for photo ops around the main lobby. I like to be in the front yet, any seat in the venue has a great view of the stage. For those in the Pit area and GA standing areas they had a few waitresses taking orders for food and drinks so you don't have to go to the concession/bar areas. The first night I was there one of the gals I hung with mentioned she got free popcorn. The last night I was there I had the Lounge access, there was light snacks and sweets provided and a bar to take drink orders at a cost. There's a lot of local parking lots to park at that are close by within walking distance. I've been to other venues and by far the service of the staff was highly impressive. Great memories and thank you!

  • Better than ever!

by Emonumentalfan98 on 5/16/25House of Blues San Diego - San DiegoRating: 5 out of 5

The used is better than ever after 25 years! They sound great. Nothing like being smashed in a room with friends you didn’t know singing at the top of your lungs to the soundtrack of your younger years!

  • Overall great experience

by Evita on 5/14/25The Wiltern - Los AngelesRating: 4 out of 5

Overall I had a wonderful time seeing The Used at the Wiltern Theater. However, it would have been nice to have Live Nation or Ticketmaster involved with deeper communication on perks and upgrades available with the band. For instance I bought my tickets early on and was under the impression that VIP experience at this venue would involve the meet and greet. Unfortunately it wasn’t had this been thoroughly explained I would have no issues. It’s unfortunate that they did not have this option available upon purchase especially being someone who bought all three night tickets 5+ months in advance. Other than that everything about the venue was a great experience.

  • Nostalgic!

    by kcomeaux1 on 5/13/25The Wiltern - Los AngelesRating: 3 out of 5

A lovely night of music and memories; however, I do have one criticism. They literally need to have someone else on hand to do the screaming vocals for their songs. The screaming vocals were either not present or sounded horrible. I get that they aren't young and spry anymore and might not be capable of doing that anymore, but I feel like this should have been prepared for during rehearsals. Some of the songs were a let down because of this but overall it was a good concert series.

  • The best band in the world

100/10 stars. No notes. Saw night 1 & 2 of the anniversary show and it was magnificent.

I have been a fan of The Used since their self titled album came out. That album still to this day touches my soul. While it wasn’t like their earlier shows, they still did a great job. Everyone in that theater sang along and you could feel the energy.
