About

The Lemon Twigs in Concert

It's not necessarily obvious that the Lemon Twigs hail from modern-day Long Island. The rock band, led by brothers Brian and Michael D'Addario, are a seamless fit with any record collection full of adventurous 1960s and '70s music—specifically, Todd Rundgren's kaleidoscopic pop; the psychedelic sounds of Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd; Big Star's well-wrought power pop; and Elton John's soulful, bluesy piano balladry. Appropriately, the brothers' stage looks are also retro-leaning, from their '70s teen heartthrob shaggy haircuts on down to clothing such as expertly flared jeans.

The Lemon Twigs' sophomore effort, an elaborate concept album titled ‘Go to School,' exudes even greater ambitions. Inspired by Stephen Sondheim, the album boasts ornate arrangements incorporating elements such as peppy horns, lush strings, and jagged electric guitars. Plot-wise, ‘Go to School' follows a teenaged chimpanzee named Shane who's struggling to come to terms with his simian nature because his human parents brought him up as a human. None other than Rundgren himself portrays the dad, while the D'Addario brothers' mom, Susan Hall, vocalizes the parts sung by the chimp's mom.

The rock opera format is a natural for the siblings. Both are actors who have performed on Broadway—Brian was in ‘Les Misérables' and also portrayed the adorable, colorful fish Flounder in the musical version of ‘The Little Mermaid'—while Michael had a prominent role in the 2012 Chris Pine movie ‘People Like Us.' The brothers' father, a songwriter named Ronnie D'Addario, also has extensive music industry experience.

After the brothers decided to start taking music more seriously in 2014, they found an early champion in Foxygen's Jonathan Rado, a kindred musical spirit who produced the Lemon Twigs' debut album, 2016's ‘Go Hollywood.' From there, it's been nothing but forward momentum, with performances on late-night TV (including on "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon"), major festival appearances (e.g., Coachella, Glastonbury), and even a big opening gig for Arctic Monkeys.

  • Expected good, got VERY VERY good

by LCBrevard on 10/29/24Antone's Nightclub - AustinRating: 5 out of 5

I've been following these guys since earlier this year. When I saw them coming here, I had to go. There have been a lot of their shows posted by an audience member over the last year and that seemed very promising. With the complexity of some of their material, they weren't always hitting the mark - especially some of the fancier harmonies. But, the things they did hit were spectacular and well worth "risking"the misses! And the tickets were absurdly inexpensive compared to the big name shows I've attended. So I bought four of them and invited three others to join me. BONUS - the opening act "Tele Novell"is sort of local but was unknown to me, so I checked them out before the show. Oh my... that was an unexpected treat. Two really good, young bands, with super competent playing of good songs in an intimate venue with fantastic sound. What a treat, even if it did involve coming into downtown Austin on a hectic Saturday night. I used a Lyft XL ride-share rather than try to drive there and find parking. That actually cost more than all four tickets!

  • AMAZING

by Kush on 10/28/24White Oak Music Hall - Downstairs - HoustonRating: 5 out of 5

We got there quite early and we were in the very front. Yes, my legs hurt for standing for so long, but the music was SO GOOD. The Lemon Twigs sounded as good as the recordings and the openers were good too!

  • The Lemon Twigs Concert

by Ang on 12/26/23The Regent Theater - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

I had so much fun. The French fries at The Regent Theater were pretty good. That staff was nice. I was in the front row between Brian and Micheal and I got some sick photos. And I was able to get both set lists, which was awesome. They were so entertaining and you could definitely see that the boys absolutely love what they do. I definitely recommended seeing them at least once.

  • Awesome concert.

by Mike on 10/9/23Majestic Theatre - MadisonRating: 5 out of 5

The Lemon Twigs concert was awesome! The venue was perfect with a great sound system and excellent visibility of the band/stage. The sound mix was perfect. It was comfortable with a nice bar and a convenient merch table. The band itself is simply incredible with gorgeous vocals/harmonies and superb musicianship! They performed wonderful, original songs and a couple choice covers. My wife and I were able to talk with Brian and Michael after the show. They are the nicest, coolest guys! We were able to get pictures and autographs. These brothers are very talented songwriters, musicians and performers. Their band was also incredible. We wish them all the success and good fortune that they deserve!
