New York City Football Club History

New York City FC began play in 2015 as the 20th franchise in Major League Soccer, following their official establishment in 2013. Playing their home matches at Yankee Stadium, New York City FC quickly became a fixture in the league, attracting significant attention through marquee signings like David Villa, Andrea Pirlo, and Frank Lampard during their early years. The club has developed a heated rivalry with the New York Red Bulls, known as the Hudson River Derby.

After establishing themselves in their inaugural season, New York City FC quickly anchored itself as a consistent playoff contender, qualifying for the postseason eight times over the past nine seasons. Their most significant milestone came in 2021 when they captured their first MLS Cup championship. Led by Golden Boot winner Valentín “Taty” Castellanos, who scored 22 goals that season, and MLS Cup MVP goalkeeper Sean Johnson, the team defeated the Portland Timbers in a dramatic final. In 2022, New York City FC added to their accolades by winning the Campeones Cup, defeating Liga MX champions Atlas FC to become the first New York-based club to secure an international trophy.

The current roster features standout players like Santiago Rodríguez, Thiago Martins, and Maxi Moralez. The team has built a strong identity around an attacking style of play, a commitment to nurturing young talent, and an emphasis on developing future stars through their youth academy and City Football Group’s global network.

Looking ahead, New York City FC is set to deepen its connection with fans and the city through the development of a state-of-the-art, soccer-specific stadium in Queens, slated to open in 2027. This ambitious project is a significant step in cementing the club’s legacy as a cornerstone of soccer culture in New York City and Major League Soccer.

  • NYCFC.

by Jacob on 3/30/25Rating: 5 out of 5

Nycfc games feel like your part of the action. Even if you sit far away, you can hear the ball moving around and the players screaming. While NYCFC can not fill up the huge yankee stadium, the atmosphere is still amazing. And the ultras are amazing. Tickets are very affordable, and all in all amazing. Only downside is maybe the food prices.

  • Lets Go NYCFC

Always have a great experience, never have an issue with the tickets. Let’s Go NYCFC!

  • Exciting Game But Pricey Food

by Ben on 3/18/25NYCFC at Yankee Stadium - BronxRating: 4 out of 5

Great price for seats, entry was smooth and easy. The game was a bit slow at first going back and forth, but once a goal was made the crowd came back to life and felt thrilling again. Prices on merch and food are a bit excessive, as to be expected at venues I suppose but damn $60 for a scarf? $30 for a beer? My expenses for food and a scarf cost me more than my seat tickets! I recommend going for the experience but skipping out on the merch and food if possible unless you want to drop an unreasonable amount of money for some mediocre finger foods.

  • The Best New York Red Bulls experience

    by Scott W on 11/26/24Citi Field - QueensRating: 5 out of 5

I’ve always wanted to see a Hudson River Derby in Queens which I went there 6 months ago but this one was special. It was the MLS Cup Playoffs and I was eager to hear about the news that the Derby would take place at Citi Field. I was happy to sing along with the Red Bulls fans and had a blast with the energy. It was a magical moment that the Red Bulls won 2-0 in the Eastern Conference Semifinals which I wished the Red Bulls could’ve scored 3 or more if the referee hadn’t disallowed these fouls in the penalty box. Other aside from that, I’ll take the win as long as the Red Bulls have the momentum Alive. This was a match to remember and New York will always be Red. Who knows, they could meet again next season or maybe when NYCFC gets their official home stadium in Queens by 2027 so I can go to as many Hudson River Derbies as much as I want. If I don’t make to the Red Bulls in some years, I can go support my other favorite eastern cities like Charlotte, Atlanta and Miami. The beer was really good and we sang like animals to say it with our hearts out to show that I love the Red Bulls much as these fans who supports the Reds.

  • Great game, but awful parking

by Popa Eddy on 11/26/24Citi Field - QueensRating: 4 out of 5

The stadium was very nice. The seats we had were padded and had good sight of the game. The only problem is trying to leave takes forever from the parking lot. They need to organize the filing for cars to leave without cars cutting in constantly from all the sides.

  • website misleading

by ronnie on 10/9/24Red Bull Arena - HarrisonRating: 3 out of 5

website clearly states that outside food and drink may be brought in. They would not allow and I had to throw it all out.

  • Great Experience!

by Diane P on 9/25/24NYCFC at Yankee Stadium - BronxRating: 5 out of 5

Wonderful! Great family event. Everything was well organized and well run. The staff at Yankee Stadium couldn't be more polite. That goes for the crowd too! Friendly and fun day out - and the match was exciting. A local boy scored the equalizer in the final minutes.

  • Great Game

by Oli on 9/24/24NYCFC at Yankee Stadium - BronxRating: 5 out of 5

Fun and Thrilling of the fan base of NYCFC. Also, a lot went to see Inter Miami just for Lionel Messi lol.

  • Don't bother buying floor seats for stand-up

by IDC on 9/24/24NYCFC at Yankee Stadium - BronxRating: 2 out of 5

As the title says. We were in the 10th row but the floor seats aren't stadium seating so we couldn't see the stage. It was a waste of money.

  • Not bad

by Laniac on 9/24/24NYCFC at Yankee Stadium - BronxRating: 3 out of 5

Great environment. Legendary venue. But Yankees stadium is not designed for soccer.
