Chicago Fire FC History

The Chicago Fire became one of Major League Soccer’s first expansion teams when it joined ahead of the 1998 season. The Fire pulled off one of the most impressive inaugural seasons across American professional sports when the new squad, coached under Bob Bradley, secured an 11-game winning streak and made a surprise playoff run that culminated in an MLS Cup Final win against the two-time defending champions, D.C. United (where Bradley previously worked as an assistant). One week later, Chicago completed the double-header with their first U.S. Open Cup championship.

The Fire found further success in the early aughts with Bradley and his successor Dave Sarachan, who helped the team secure three more U.S. Open Cup victories in 2000, 2003 and 2006. In addition, the Fire earned the Supporters’ Shield in 2003. All-Star forward Mike Magee became the first player to win the MLS MVP Award while representing Chicago in 2013.

First time to Soldier Field, I have been to NY Red Bulls, Orlando SC, Nashville, St Louis SC, Minneapolis & Cincinnati for soccer games, the stadium is serviceable but dated (we lived the history behind the stadium) but that comes with having challenges to make viewer feel close to the action without viewing issues (we were in first row but the hand rail for steps to field level obstructed our view and after the game you cannot get close enough to get autographs) as you can at Nashville, Orlando, Minneapolis, St Louis and TQL

  • Super Fun Game

by Nicole on 4/16/25Soldier Field - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

This was probably the best that the Chicago Fire has played against Inter Miami. Other games had ended 4-1 or 3-1. This one ended 0-0 which makes me think the Chicago Fire really put up a fight. Soldier Field is a cool venue. Everything was organized, there was a lot of security, and there were many options for food and drinks. I had a really good time.

I don’t know much about soccer. I don’t really follow the sport, but a friend of mine is super into it so I went just for fun. I really enjoyed it. I enjoyed the energy. I enjoyed Soldier Field. I enjoyed all of the memorabilia of the Chicago Bears I thought it was a great first time attending Soldier Field.

  • Cold but fun!

by PaddleG on 3/4/25Soldier Field - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

Despite a last second game-tying goal and the coldest home opener in awhile the game was a ton of fun with an interesting half time show, great concessions, and a great match.

  • Inter-Miami Game

by Cat on 9/8/24Soldier Field - ChicagoRating: 3 out of 5

Aside from the disappointment of not seeing Messi play (which is beyond anyone's control and everyone's dilemma), the huge disappointment was when the Chicago Fire rolled out massive discounts to that game after I had paid big $$$ for 200 level tickets well in advance. In the week leading up to the game, we found through Ticketmaster that for less than what I paid for, I could have had seats close up in the 100 section. Although there was a promo offering discounts for next season's games, a better alternative would have been to upgrade our seats at this game or a refund equal to the difference of what they were offering for my level of seats. There were plenty of empty seats close to the soccer pitch. The offer for next year's season was a ploy to purchase season tickets for the incoming Chicago Fire season. No thanks.

  • Walk ways

by Topher on 9/6/24Soldier Field - ChicagoRating: 3 out of 5

It is way to crowded in the concessions area and to get to the get to the bathroom from upper level.
