About

Primus was founded in 1984 in El Sobrante, California by Les Claypool and guitarist Todd Huth, who were later joined by drummer Jay Lane. Beginning as an underground act, the band slowly gained notoriety and critical acclaim after their records Sailing the Seas of Cheese (1991) and Pork Soda (1993) both went Platinum, along with their records, Wynona's Big Brown Beaver (1996), Sailing the Seas of Cheese (Deluxe Edition) (2013) and Primus & the Chocolate Factory with the Fungi Ensemble (2015), all three of which earned Grammy nominations. After the release of their record Antipop in 1999, the group disbanded but reformed as a touring entity in 2010 and began releasing music again soon after; Primus has released nine studio albums in total. The present lineup features Claypool on bass, Larry “Ler” LaLonde on guitar and Tim “Herb” Alexander on drums. Primus have delighted audiences all over the world with their oddball lyricism and out-of-the-box approach to music for over 40 years, and continue to be dedicated to bringing their innovative discography on the road.

  • Primus sucks!

by Pudding’ Tain on 1/6/25Fox Theater - Oakland - OaklandRating: 5 out of 5

Claypool and the gang killed it! Plenty of deep cuts I never thought I would experience in a live setting. Great venue, although they wouldn’t let me back into retrieve my phone. Hats off to Claypool and friends

  • Fantastic!

by GarageAesthetic on 1/4/25Fox Theater - Oakland - OaklandRating: 5 out of 5

I’ll admit, I was a bit surprised when my son told me he liked Primus, and also somewhat amused, since I saw them back in 1992 when I was his age. If there was any lingering doubt that dad may, in fact, still be cool, I quickly dispelled it by taking him to see them on New Year’s Eve; his first concert. I’m very happy to report that they did not disappoint! Musically they were absolutely spot on and the sound was phenomenal, the lighting and visuals were fantastic, and the Fox Theater has become one of my favorite venues. Of course, my son had a blast and this was a perfect introduction to the live music experience, although I’m afraid they set the bar pretty damn high.

  • Primus-ish...Prim-ish?

by DC on 1/3/25Fox Theater - Oakland - OaklandRating: 5 out of 5

Wasn't proper "primus"but still great. Here are more words to meet word minimum.

Primus always puts on a great show. Great to hear some side projects.

  • Huh

by Rulz on 1/2/25Fox Theater - Oakland - OaklandRating: 5 out of 5

Great show. Neat venue. Good extra room. Nice lights.

  • Primus double shot

by Frog Brigaders Pat and Kat on 1/2/25Fox Theater - Oakland - OaklandRating: 5 out of 5

I've seen several Primus/Les Claypool shows and they never disappoint. Both nights were epic, my wife (who is very new to this type of music) came with me and loved it. I appreciate these talented artists and their abilities. The band was challenged by the short notice of their drummers resignation just weeks before the event. Thankfully Brain stepped up and filled in. I hope Les and Larry find their star drummer and continue on for many years to come.

  • Sad night of karaoke

by Rezree on 9/3/24The Anthem - WashingtonRating: 2 out of 5

I was already disappointed when Fishbone was removed from the lineup, but the replacement was...I kid you not, a sad karaoke clown. Literally a clown who did not play any instruments or have any backup band....just him doing sad covers. It was the very worst opening act I have ever seen over hundreds of shows of many different genres. The next act, Coheed and Cambria, was informed by a doctor just before taking the stage that the singer should not perform that evening, so that whole set was karaoke, too, with the audience filling in the completely unintelligible lyrics. I had been told that I would recognize at least a few of their songs, but no. Finally, Primus came on but brought the sad clown back out for two more numbers! Sad clown did not seem to know all of the lyrics to the Led Zepplin song they selected to cover. It was frustrating to wait so long for the only band worth listening to that evening only to have to leave before they were done if I didn't want to be stranded downtown after the subway closed. I made the last train of the night with less than a minute to spare. That was the best part of the entire night. So glad I saw the Farewell To Kings tour 2 years ago, which was exponentially better than this train wreck of a concert.

  • Lower your prices

by Mike S on 8/30/24Broadview Stage at SPAC - Saratoga SpringsRating: 4 out of 5

I will start by saying I love this venue. It's a great place for a show. However, the prices are outrageous. No way a can of water should be $6.50. Sadly if the prices don't come down to a reasonable level I won't be back. Sad to say about a place I loved going to for the last 20+ years.

  • Great show. Great venue.

by machinehead on 8/28/24Grind City Amphitheater - MemphisRating: 5 out of 5

Primus put on a great show. Grind City Brewing had plenty of room, toilets, beer, and food. I would go there again for another concert.

  • What a show!

by JLake on 8/26/24Saint Louis Music Park - Maryland HeightsRating: 5 out of 5

Amazing experience! My son's first show, and for his birthday. Band talked to him in the crowd! So awesome!!
