About

Primus was founded in 1984 in El Sobrante, California by Les Claypool and guitarist Todd Huth, who were later joined by drummer Jay Lane. Beginning as an underground act, the band slowly gained notoriety and critical acclaim after their records Sailing the Seas of Cheese (1991) and Pork Soda (1993) both went Platinum, along with their records, Wynona's Big Brown Beaver (1996), Sailing the Seas of Cheese (Deluxe Edition) (2013) and Primus & the Chocolate Factory with the Fungi Ensemble (2015), all three of which earned Grammy nominations. After the release of their record Antipop in 1999, the group disbanded but reformed as a touring entity in 2010 and began releasing music again soon after; Primus has released nine studio albums in total. The present lineup features Claypool on bass, Larry “Ler” LaLonde on guitar and Tim “Herb” Alexander on drums. Primus have delighted audiences all over the world with their oddball lyricism and out-of-the-box approach to music for over 40 years, and continue to be dedicated to bringing their innovative discography on the road.

  • Of course, Primus Sucks!!!

by motorvatin on 8/24/24Grind City Amphitheater - MemphisRating: 5 out of 5

Not sure which show this review is for as I hit three on this leg, St Louis, Birmingham and Memphis. All three shows were fantastic, all three venues were fantastic, all three setlists were fantastic, and each of the different openers for each of those shows all were very entertaining. Had a blast and wish i could have hit more shows. Maybe the next time.

  • "Amazing"doesn't even cover it!

by Raelien on 8/23/24Avondale Brewing Co. - BirminghamRating: 5 out of 5

Easily one of the best shows I've ever been to. Avondale Brewing was a great venue, it was really hot but that's to be expected on an Alabama summer evening. Lots of dads there, including my own! We had so much fun jamming out together to both Puddles and Primus. The banana roadies were adorable, and I love that Les gave them a big shout out and let them come dance on stage. The band was really engaging with us, and so mesmerizing that sometimes it felt like it was just them and me there alone! I absolutely loved the light show and the visuals playing on screen behind them. This is definitely going to be one of my most treasured memories with my dad and I'm so thankful I got to attend! I will definitely be seeing them again next time they come to 'Bama <3

  • Grind city doesn’t suck

    by 901Jess on 8/23/24Grind City Amphitheater - MemphisRating: 5 out of 5

Primus killed it! I loved the opening act. The venue was great. Good food options, great beer! I did not see water stations until the end of the show, my only suggestions is to make water stations clear and accessible the entire show.

  • Best show I've been to

by KBean on 8/23/24Avondale Brewing Co. - BirminghamRating: 5 out of 5

Best show I've been to. Great venue, they handled the show very well. Primus and Puddles put on a hell of a show!

  • Primus is made of 3 kings

by Pork Spiral on 8/23/24Grind City Amphitheater - MemphisRating: 5 out of 5

Man, where do I begin? These guys absolutely blew the roof off the outdoor venue. They had a great opener, and when Primus finally came out on stage, they delivered more than I knew was even possible. They played banger after banger, and didn’t miss a single note. Les was absolutely on fire this night. Ler and Herb also killed it per usual, but man, Les was really going hard. EL MOONO

  • Great show in Memphis

by jhorn on 8/23/24Grind City Amphitheater - MemphisRating: 5 out of 5

Fantastic Negrito was amazing. Hadn't heard his music prior, but a big fan now. And Primus, well they put on a hell of a show. Grind City Brewery is a great venue for an outdoor concert.

  • Great Primus Show!

by Clowns can sing, but they are silly. on 8/22/24Avondale Brewing Co. - BirminghamRating: 5 out of 5

Clowns belong in the circus. Primus should of opened with Fishbone

  • Avondale Primus show

by Hobnero on 8/21/24Avondale Brewing Co. - BirminghamRating: 5 out of 5

The show was great. Puddles pity party was surprisingly genuine and hilarious because of the parody factor but he can really sing. Les Claypool and primus put on the amazing show that I suspected they would from the outset. Avondale brewing Company is an ideal spot to see a concert outdoors. Great town great people great show equals great fun. Primus rules.

  • Primus Lucky Bastard VIP Experience

by Kenny on 8/21/24Avondale Brewing Co. - BirminghamRating: 5 out of 5

(1)We arrived at 4pm,scanned our tickets & received our signed Primus 2024 Summer Tour poster.(2)The early-entry VIP Q & A session(which was next)was real cool.(2)Then came the VIP crowd-free shopping experience.(3)The opening act was a 1 man musical project called Puddles Pity Party. His clown costume looked JUST LIKE the clown in the Ratt “Lay It Down” video. He won-over the crowd by performing songs from different genres and singing TOTALLY DIFFERENT lyrics over those songs! It was brilliantly bizarre & great!!!Primus we’re EVERY BIT as good as we expected & the sound quality was PERFECT.They opened with “Those Damn Blue-Collar Tweakers” & closed with “Winona’s Big Brown Beaver”.Most classics were played. My buddy & I are Old-School Metalheads who have seen a LOT of concerts & always wanted to see them live.We agreed that this Primus concert was one of the best we have EVER seen.Everything about the VIP Experience was run very smoothly & we had such a GREAT time!!!Now,it was expensive but it was a once-in-a-lifetime chance for us…so I splurged. We are both VERY HAPPY with our Lucky Bastards VIP Experience & I might buy more in the future.

  • Disappointed

by Rush Fan Girl on 8/21/24Avondale Brewing Co. - BirminghamRating: 1 out of 5

A show for stoners… couldn’t hear vocals. Took nearly ten musics to get through one song that was originally recorded for 5! Slow… Puddles Pity Party made the night for me. Super disappointed fan. 😐

  • Too Short !

by Doug on 8/21/24Avondale Brewing Co. - BirminghamRating: 4 out of 5

Good Show ! Lopsided Venue ! Obstructed Viewing area !

  • Primus and Puddles Pity Party

by Eddie Cool on 8/21/24Avondale Brewing Co. - BirminghamRating: 5 out of 5

I liked the Venue ( Avondale Brewing Co.) , recommend the A list add on ( show is outdoors), was nice being able to cool off or sit , plus the exclusive bar access. Puddles Pity Party was very good and funny . Primus blew us away , was my first time seeing either. I loved it all ..Staff at Venue was super.

  • Wait for it

by Slade on 8/21/24Avondale Brewing Co. - BirminghamRating: 5 out of 5

They were really good, but they play all of their biggest hits last. Happy I got to see them

  • Primus and Puddles

by Veston on 8/21/24Avondale Brewing Co. - BirminghamRating: 5 out of 5

This was an amazing experience. Puddles is a fantastic paring for the eclectic and often comedic sounds of Primus! Primus themselves still kickass and nail every performance with precision and style. 10/10 would see again!

  • PRIMUS - Avondale Brewing Co.

by Ria on 8/21/24Avondale Brewing Co. - BirminghamRating: 5 out of 5

PRIMUS is just as good 30+ years later. They sound great! The venue is awesome! Smaller outdoor venue that had great sound. They had water available for your empty bottle and a guy handing out water during the show. Very well run venue. My only complaint is the pit area fence that wasn’t full and it’s better with a sea of people front to back without that big of a gap so close to the stage. I love PRIMUS and have seen them on pork soda twice, tales from punchbowl, and Anti pop. Just amazing musicians that put on a great show with awesome lights and visuals!

  • Wow

by Cheezy on 8/21/24Avondale Brewing Co. - BirminghamRating: 5 out of 5

Seriously mind blowing experience. Les Claypool is other worldly on the bass. It was powerful witnessing one of the greatest bassists of all time do his thing

  • Great show.

by Bb on 8/21/24Skyla Credit Union Amphitheatre - CharlotteRating: 5 out of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed Puddles Pity Party. Coheed and Cambria were awesome as always. Primus was everything we could have hoped for. Really good show.
