Todd Rundgren on Tour

Fans never know what to expect from a Todd Rundgren show, which is a testament to his range as a musician. For example, his "The Individualist, A True Star" tour was named so because of its unique format: Along with a set of hits, Rundgren also performed a side of his seminal 1973 LP A Wizard, a True Star. In cities with multiple shows booked, the musician played a different side of the album each night.

No matter where Rundgren's creative muse takes him on a given tour, what stands out is his voice — an instrument that can handle both growling rock and blue-eyed soul — and his charismatic stage presence. Thanks to this versatility, Rundgren has also toured as part of Ringo Starr's All-Starr Band and, as a solo artist, opened for Hall & Oates and teamed up with Joe Jackson for a co-headlining tour. In 2019, he joined forces with the Monkees' Micky Dolenz, Christopher Cross and Badfinger's Joey Molland for the "It Was Fifty Years Ago Today – A Tribute to the Beatles' White Album" tour.

Todd Rundgren in Concert

Todd Rundgren first broke into the music business in the late '60s with the band Nazz, for whom he wrote "Open Your Eyes" and "Hello It's Me." He then released several solo albums, including 1972's Something/Anything? (which featured a re-recording of "Hello It's Me") and then founded the rock band Utopia, a group that drew on prog, power-pop and new wave. In 1983, Rundgren released one of his best-known songs, "Bang the Drum All Day."

In addition to his own work, Rundgren is also a well-respected studio artist who's produced albums for Hall & Oates, XTC, Psychedelic Furs and Meat Loaf. Rundgren has also continued to release solo albums, including 2017's White Knight, which featured guest spots from Robyn, Joe Walsh and Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor.

  • Todd Rundgren was amazing!

by dondrummerjazz on 7/15/09CLUB NOKIA - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

I've seen Todd many times over the years (from 1975 to present) and this was once again, an incredible show. His energy and enthusiasm for performing music is still strong after all these years. The new album songs are well crafted but Mountain Top is my fav!! They totally rocked Club Nokia!!

one of the best shows since the 70s great band way to rock

  • Todd was indescribably delicious!

by lamourband on 7/15/09CLUB NOKIA - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

Todd was relaxed, loose, and having fun. The band was tight. How can a band sound bad with Prairie Prince behind them? Todd's rapport with the house is natural, like you're kicking it in his living room. The setlist held some real gems, though I continue to hope he'll revisit Marriage of Heaven & Hell while pulling from Oops...Wrong Planet. Arena rocks, and it's great to hear Todd bringing the juice. My only complaint was the FOH mix. The system seemed over-built enough for the room to afford a solid and clean mix, but the bottom just wasn't right. The band would've displyed much more power and energy with a little boom in the room. Assuming Todd travels with his own FOH engineer, I blame the FOH system or house limits, as Todd had a much more effective mix in previous visits to The Grove of Anaheim and The Coach House in San Juan Capistrano. Bottom line...we'll continue to attend Todd's shows whenever we can, as he always rewards.

  • Rundgren Rocks!!!

by babaandbaba on 7/15/09CLUB NOKIA - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

And by "Rocks" we really mean it. The guy is phenomenal. Two days before his 64th. Amazing! He did play a few of his classics, but for those who think it's just an oldies show, you'll be disappointed. I can see how some in the audience were disappointed that he didn't play more of the old stuff. But Todd is a full-bodied musician, his music reflecting a variety of different genres. He played many songs off their most recent album. So, if you're going to go I would recommend listening to the most recent record, see if that floats your boat. I must say though that hearing it live was SO MUCH better. The recording simply can't capture his voice, humor and wit.

This was my first time seeing Todd live. My husband has been listening to his music for the last 30-40 years. Although I remember his older songs, I absolutely fell in love with Arena and Liars. The Nokia Theatre was fantastic as we had great seats and were really close. Todd and the other musicians put on a fantastic show. I loved it, loved it, loved it!!! It was obvious to me that he cares about his fans.

What a great show, even after all these years, Todd Rundgren still has it. His band was great too! As long as he performs, I will go see him.

  • Todd is God

by Ocram on 7/15/09CLUB NOKIA - Los AngelesRating: 4 out of 5

Great show, with essentially the same setlist as his previous "Arena" shows in SoCal (I caught it at the Canyon Club in Agoura Hills). Club Nokia was a better venue for this band, which was smoking. Black Maria was worth the price of admission alone.

  • Better than EVER!!!

by Kattales on 7/15/09CLUB NOKIA - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

Been a fan since A Capella. Love the reinvention of the history of his music found in the new album, ARENA, so I thought the concert KILLED!!! He always finds great players and Todd's voice is as strong if not better than I can remember. His fan base is definitely an odd mix. Fortunately, the drunk girls were toasted beyond repair by the time his set started and quietly slept through the whole thing. At least I appreciated it. Bottom Line, Todd's still got it and then some.

  • Todd and Kasem were Amazing!!!

by TheMermaid on 7/15/09Tralf - BuffaloRating: 5 out of 5

I saw him at the Tralf August 2008 when the tour had begun and then again at the Tralf July 2009 when it was near the end. Both concerts were amazing! Can't get enough!

  • Rundgren - TOO LOUD

    by normiev56 on 7/3/09Tralf - BuffaloRating: 3 out of 5

Todd Rundgren and his band had great energy and stage presence however, it was much too loud and ear piercing for a venue the size of the Tralf. You would think the sound man would have adjusted accordingly after a few songs but, he didn't. This took much away from what was an otherwise good performance. Todd said it was the third to last perfomance on this tour and it was apparent with his vocals.

I've seen Todd in the 70's many times with Utopia. He has not lost a beat, what a musician.......and what a fantastic concert.. It was a great nite !!

  • Todd Rungren~Great Show!

by Blaez on 7/2/09Tralf - BuffaloRating: 4 out of 5

We have been fans of Todd's since the 70s and have seen a number of his performances. His band is solid (with pal Kasim Sultan) and Todd still rocks as always. His virtuoso guitar and great songs still are meaningful and fit with contemporary sounds quite well. His voice is aging (mine too) and it is amazing how he still sings and somewhat has to yell his tunes. Still unmistakeably Todd though. His music is metal loud and could maybe be more balanced, but mezmerizing when it all fits together. Great sense of humor and political savy was enjoyed between songs.

  • Another Great TR Show!

by RoostersGirl on 7/2/09Tralf - BuffaloRating: 5 out of 5

I've seen TR - solo and with different line-ups - many times, and he never fails to leave you wanting more! The current line-up is very polished! A great mix of old and new - should satisfy all fan levels. Arena is a great new album and the concert showed the energy that Todd continues to lavish on the crowds! I can't wait for the next show! The Tralf in Buffalo is a great place for this artist (and ensemble) - although the loss of tables on the main floor (to allow for extra ticket sale, we heard) was very disappointing to those fans who stood in line for hours to get the best seats - only to have your view blocked by the growing crowd in the front of the stage.

  • Rundgren Rocks the Tralf

by Thomjay on 7/2/09Tralf - BuffaloRating: 5 out of 5

Simply put, Todd Rundgren can still rock after 40 years in the music industry. The Tralf show featured some old classics from the Nazz era and a couple of Utopia staples and the entire "Arena" album, Todd's latest release. The backing band of Jesse Gress, Prairie Prince, Rachel Haden, and Kasim Sulton are a powerful combination, blending brute force and subtle fills. They play with an intesity that is to be admired and awed.

  • Todd is God!

by TheBuffaloRoom on 7/2/09Tralf - BuffaloRating: 5 out of 5

Great as always! Each time is better than the last.

  • Todd rocked!!!

by suedehead on 7/2/09Tralf - BuffaloRating: 4 out of 5

If you want to hear "Hello it's me" or "Love is the answer" This is not the show for you. This show was closer to AC/DC then it was Utopia. Todd's voice is still unbelievable when he wasn't screaming. He let off on the gas pedal for maybe 3-4 songs which were my fav but the rockers were good too. He plays "Arena" his new album start to finish plus 5 classics

  • Todd at the Tralf
