Portland Trail Blazers History

The Trail Blazers joined the NBA in the 1970 expansion. Despite the presence of back-to-back rookies of the year Geoff Petrie and Sidney Wicks, they struggled, finishing last in their division five of their first six seasons. Then, in a remarkable reversal, they went 49-33 in the 1976–77 season, led by big men Bill Walton and Maurice Lucas, guards Lionel Hollins and Dave Twardzik, and head coach Jack Ramsay.

After defeating the Chicago Bulls, Denver Nuggets and Los Angeles Lakers in the first three rounds of the playoffs, they found themselves pitted against a powerhouse Philadelphia 76ers team led by Julius Erving, Caldwell Jones and George McGinnis in the NBA Finals. They dropped the first two games of the series but stormed back to win four straight to capture the franchise's only championship.

Title in hand, the Blazers would go on to make the playoffs 25 of the next 26 seasons. For 12 seasons starting in 1983, the catalyst was guard Clyde Drexler. In the 1989–90 season, with All-Star forward Buck Williams joining the team, the Blazers again made the NBA Finals, falling in five games to the Detroit Pistons. They posted a franchise-best 63-19 record the next season but succumbed to the Lakers in the Conference Finals. Another trip to the NBA Finals awaited in 1991–92, but the Blazers lost in six games to a Chicago Bulls team led by Michael Jordan.

The Blazers' forays into the playoffs continued through the 2002–03 season, with two of those trips, in 1998–99 and 1999–00, ending in losses in the conference finals. Beginning in the latter half of the 2000s, the team reached sustained regular season success behind notable talents like Brandon Roy, LaMarcus Aldridge, Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum. Roy and Lillard both received the Rookie of the Year award for their respective first seasons.

  • Where was LeBron & Luka

by PissedOff on 4/16/25Moda Center - PortlandRating: 1 out of 5

Very disappointing as lakers failed to turn up with their a-team and sent the d-team instead. We spent a lot on good tickets close to the action to watch the lakers lose

  • Overpriced and Overrated

by Disappointed Fan on 4/16/25Moda Center - PortlandRating: 2 out of 5

For the price of the tickets (that were significantly higher than previous games this season) one would expect that both teams would have at least had some starters on the court. And if "injured"they would have at least traveled with their team and been on the bench. If the stars can't play the ticket price should reflect that. The audacity to think the team name alone justifies the ticket prices is outrageous. Glad the Blazers won but the game was a sloppy joke and a big disappointment.

  • No show by starters

by Leti on 4/16/25Moda Center - PortlandRating: 1 out of 5

Thus was a terrible experience. My family had saved up for months to surprise our son for his 15th birthday to see LeBron and Luka play against the Blazers. We paid over $1100 for these tickets and neither LeBron nor Luka were even on the bench. My son was so disappointed and sad. It was a huge expense for our family. It’s a shame that this happened. It broke my heart to see my son do disappointed after 4 months of anticipating watching these players.

  • Lakers disappoint

by Lakers disappoint on 4/16/25Moda Center - PortlandRating: 2 out of 5

Would have been nice to see some starting lakers players come to Portland, everything else great - max train efficient, ticketing check in fast, view from seats…

  • Why so much when the superstars didn't show up?

by sunshine on 4/16/25Moda Center - PortlandRating: 3 out of 5

The game was fun. We went to see Lebron James and Doncic and paid a high price to be there and then they didn't show up. Nice seeing Bronny but we paid a lot to get there and then they weren't there....really kind of a bummer.

  • Fun except for music

by Gordon on 3/28/25Moda Center - PortlandRating: 4 out of 5

It's always fun to go to a Trail Blazers game, whether they win or lose. But the music is too loud and too ubiquitous.

  • My ticket payment was worthy. Blazers won the game!

by BB on 3/23/25Moda Center - PortlandRating: 5 out of 5

It was a full fun. The team won the game. The arena was full excited.

  • Fantastic game and a wonderful experience.

by Erik on 3/20/25Moda Center - PortlandRating: 5 out of 5

My son’s birthday, we had seats in the club level and were waiting to go to the seats while we ate before the game, sitting in the dining area on the 2nd level. A representative from the team came by and gave us free upgraded tickets to the 5th row courtside. It was amazingly seeing the game that close, really could see the skill and difficulty playing at the NBA level.

  • Great seats

    by Chewy7392 on 3/15/25Moda Center - PortlandRating: 5 out of 5

The seats were really good other than when server was standing there, but she was serving people food and drinks.

  • Great game and excellent service throughout

    by Shaung97 on 3/15/25Moda Center - PortlandRating: 5 out of 5

The game was exciting. The service was excellent from the people scanning the tickets to the cashiers at the places I bought my food and drinks to the ushers. Stan was as always a very friendly greeter as I was scanning my ticket at the South Gate. The experience every time I come to events at the Moda Center and VMC us always excellent.
