About

The sophomore effort from Oregon-bred trio Joseph, Good Luck, Kid (2019) is a road movie in album form, an odyssey that turns emotional, existential, and entirely literal. With their intimate storytelling and restless intensity, Natalie Schepman and her sisters Allison and Meegan Closner detail that journey in songs that careen, sprawl, and often soar, ultimately spinning a narrative of life-changing transformation. "The through-line of the album is this idea of moving into the driver's seat of your own life--recognizing that you're the adult now, and everything's up to you from this moment on," says Schepman. "It's just the universe looking down on you like, 'Good luck, kid.'"

Joseph grace every song with the captivating chemistry they first discovered upon forming in 2014. Spontaneously choosing their name on a trip to visit their grandfather in the Oregon town of Joseph, the band got their start playing backyard parties, and gradually amassed a devoted fanbase. Following the release of I'm Alone, No You're Not (2016)--an album made with Mike Mogis (First Aid Kit, Jenny Lewis)--Joseph soon began taking the stage at major festivals like Bonnaroo and touring with such artists as James Bay and Amos Lee.

In Good Luck, Kid, Joseph deliberately strayed from the dreamy folk of their 2016 debut, giving way to a far grittier and more dynamic sound. Produced by Christian "Leggy" Langdon (Meg Myers, Charlotte OC), the result is a nuanced breed of pop/rock built on thick drums and lustrous guitars, heavy grooves, and radiant melodies. Despite that bolder sonic palette, Good Luck, Kid remains centered on the band's crystalline vocal work, including the otherworldly harmonies that suggest a near-telepathic connection among sisters.

My friend shared Joseph with me literally just a few weeks ago and I fell in love with their music. I asked said friend if she wanted to see them live but she was going out of town.. I decided to do the five hour drive to Seattle solo to see them and explore and after the 5hr drive turned into 7.5 with traffic I ALMOST skipped the concert. My goodness am I glad I pushed through! This was THE BEST live performance I’ve ever seen with amazing range and perfect harmonies. I’m only sad I did not know of them sooner since one sister is leaving the band. I feel so lucky that the only show I got to see was their 10 Year Celebration. Also wish I got a backstage pass.. they were sold out. Amazing group. Amazing voices. Just WOW.

These ladies kill it. They command their crowd. The harmonies are tight and powerful and the songs are great.

To me Joseph can be best described in a single word: Authentic. The sisters of Joseph; Ally, Meegan, and Natalie are some of the most wonderful human beings I've had the pleasure of meeting and seeing perform. Their music has the kind of heart and soul poured into it that most artists could only dream of. Excellent vocalists and songwriters. They are genuine, and show true vulnerability on stage whether they are performing or having fun talking to the crowd, like at this performance which was a stripped down show with just the three of them on stage with a guitar. I can always say that one of my most favorite shows will always be the last time I saw Joseph play! They were joined on stage by solo artist Sister, who was also their opener that evening. She was phenomenal, giving an intimate and vulnerable performance of original songs and a cover or two. Absolutely go see these incredibly talented artists! They absolutely deserve the world

  • Fantastic show, great energy, great talent, great time!!

Joseph put on an absolutely awesome show! This was my first time watching them, but I hope it's not my last. Their energy and talent definitely put a smile on my face. Great harmonies flowed from this trio! You could definitely tell they loved putting on a great show and were happy to be performing. Also a big shout out to their opening act The Burney Sisters!! This duo never disappoints and always pours their hearts into their performances. I've been following these girls for over two years and they just keep bringing the heat! If you haven't heard of Joseph or The Burney Sisters you have got to check them out. Both groups are amazing!! My only complaint goes out to the venue, The Blue Note in Columbia, MO. They have 4 light canons across the rear of their stage. When these high intensity lighting units are powered on they send a blinding beam of light across both upper balconies. When these lights flash across your line of sight it is painful, causing you to either put your head down or cover your eyes. So your choice is to get general admission tickets which means you stand for the show at floor level, but below the blinding lights; or pay for seating, but have to deal with the silly lights. You've been warned about the lights! Joseph and The Burney Sisters get two thumbs up!!!

  • An evening of pure joy.

As a trio with no back up band, Joseph gave an evening of musical joy. The first night of the tour led to some restarts of songs, some additions to the set list. It honestly made it feel like you were amongst friends. Musically the harmonies were so pure.

  • Always a good show

    by Davestwin7 on 7/3/23Rating: 5 out of 5

Joseph never disappoint with their shows. High energy, moments of vulnerability. The new album has some great songs, which live are really good. Scattered with songs off previous albums, the entire evening was top notch.

  • Truly Incredible

I've always liked Joseph and appreciated their work, but seeing them live has completely changed my perception - the power and emotion that comes across in their live performance is just unmatched. I've been to a good number of concerts, and this is easily in my top 3, perhaps even my favorite ever. I was moved to tears by the sheer beauty and raw emotion of the song Waves Crash. Already considering traveling to see this show live again.
