About

James Taylor in Concert

James Taylor is the archetypal singer/songwriter, who helped create the template for the troubadour style that dominated the 1970s. And when he brings his blend of folk, pop, rock, and soul influences to the stage, it's like a part of history is unfolding before the crowd, with enough tuneful energy to generate some major good-time vibes. The five-time Grammy-winning, multi-platinum songsmith offered up tracks like "Fire and Rain" and "You've Got a Friend" to the collective pop-cultural consciousness in the '70s, and they've stayed there ever since. Of course, he's continued to make compelling music for many decades, and his shows are a grab bag of transfixing new tunes and beloved classics. Taylor's 2018 tour with his All-Star Band (not to be confused with Ringo Starr's similarly named group) also shows how much a crew of world-class players can bring to a classic catalog. Some of the most renowned musicians on the planet lend their talents to the band, including drumming god Steve Gadd, hotshot jazz pianist Kevin Hays, legendary saxman Lou Marini, and more.

James Taylor Background

James Taylor was born in Boston, but moved to North Carolina a few years later, and the bucolic settings of his childhood eventually informed the pastoral side of his songwriting in a major way. He learned guitar in his adolescence, soaking up folk and blues influences before hitting the coffeehouse circuit in the '60s. Before too long he was in Greenwich Village fronting a band called The Flying Machine, but he soon emerged as a solo singer/songwriter. His 1970 album ‘Sweet Baby James' became a game-changer for the whole '70s music scene. Alongside the likes of Carole King and Joni Mitchell, Taylor epitomized the thoughtful, acoustic-based ballad style that came to dominate the era, and ubiquitous hits like "Fire and Rain" and "Country Road" were central to that style. In later years Taylor showed his versatility by scoring smash singles with covers of R&B tunes like Marvin Gaye's "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)" and Jimmy Jones' '50s hit "Handyman," and Taylor has never stopped finding fresh ways to bring his work to the huge audience that's been addicted to his music for decades.

  • An Evening of Wonderful Memories

by Hayley on 6/10/25The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park - San DiegoRating: 5 out of 5

James Taylor still has it. He's still kind of hot at 77, still very funny, still sounds great and still plays with his so talented band. What a great concert at a beautiful venue (the Rady Shell).

  • What an Icon!!!

by Susanf on 6/5/25The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park - San DiegoRating: 5 out of 5

I'm not sure why I waited 50 years to see James Taylor! Not only is his music timeless but his songs took me back to some of the best memories from my past! Not only is his talent still intact at 77 years old but he and his "all-star"band (which included his son, who is also very talented) were thoroughly entertaining and James Taylor is super FUNNY too! I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND seeing him before he no longer can perform.

James Taylor’s voice is so warm and distinctive. He’s self-effacing and the band is excellent too. It is wonderful to leave the concert so grateful to have spent an evening listening to him, living legend that he is!

James Taylor’s voice remains to be smooth and true as ever. He sang incredibly with what appeared to be little effort while maintaining an entertaining stage presence. He and his music have truly stood the test of time ❤️

  • The best show I have seen

by TwodownottO on 5/29/25Chateau Ste Michelle Winery - WoodinvilleRating: 5 out of 5

JT still has a fantastic Voice, his stories between songs are epic as are the responses he gives from folks yelling stuff to him, when he talks you can hear a pin drop! We have been to many of his shows and none are the same, how he treats his band and brings in the back up singers very cool, JT thank you for putting on a show that I thought was one of your best.

  • Well organized

by Terry on 5/29/25Chateau Ste Michelle Winery - WoodinvilleRating: 5 out of 5

The James Taylor concert was an exceptional experience. His and his band's performance was fabulous, of course!! James Taylor is so generous, bringing on the opening act to share the last song, and then after a long no-intermission concert, stayed behind to sign autographs. Seeing the performance at Chateau Ste. Michelle was seamless from start to finish. The winery has a large staff who helped people park, enter the venue, go through security, find our seats, exit after the concert, and leave the parking lot. All were accomplished efficiently and with friendly and welcoming staff--outstanding!!
