New York Rangers History

The Rangers, one of the Original Six NHL teams(Opens in new tab), were founded in 1926 by Tex Rickard. According to legend, the New York media nicknamed the team “Tex's Rangers,” a play on the famed law enforcers Texas Rangers.

The team has won four Stanley Cup Championships, the first of which came in only their second season (1928) and the most recent in 1994, beating Vancouver in Game 7 to break a 54-year drought and send Cup-starved fans into a frenzy. The Rangers have also taken home four Presidents’ Trophies and won eight divisional championships — most recently winning both for the 2023-2024 season.

The Rangers' 2017-2018 campaign broke a string of seven consecutive seasons in which the team reached the Playoffs — including the 2013-2014 campaign, which ended in a five-game series loss to the Los Angeles Kings in the Stanley Cup Final.

Among the Hall of Famers to don the Rangers sweater are Andy Bathgate, Eric Lindros, Phil Esposito, and Wayne Gretzky. Nine players have had their number retired by the team: Bathgate, Ed Giacomin, Rod Gilbert, Adam Graves, Harry Howell, Brian Leetch, Mark Messier, Jean Ratelle, and Mike Richter. Herb Brooks (1937-2003), who coached the Rangers from 1981-1985, also coached the U.S. Olympic hockey team to its "Miracle on Ice" victory over the Soviet Union and on to a gold medal in the 1980 Winter Olympic Games in Lake Placid, N.Y.

MSG was great old rink. Ppl just need to realize the lower bowl seat are more layed back so you do lose sight lines(new rink more vertical). It would also be nice if gates open up 1.5-2 hrs before game times takes pressure of line ups away.

  • Great show.

Seeing the Rangers at the Garden is always a great time.

  • Rangers ice hockey- our first game

by Appsy on 3/12/25Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

The place is just amazing, a proper buzz from start to finish, the patriotism for the team is immense and we really enjoyed the game (even though the result didn’t go the way we wanted) Only flaw is that the rangers fans need a new chant! “Let’s go rangers” needs to be developed 😂

  • Loved the Rangers Game

by MLT NYC on 3/12/25Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 4 out of 5

The game was lots of fun. I would appreciate better mock views from seats when choosing tickets. We didn’t realize our view of the center scoreboard would be completely blocked.

  • Rangers defeat Islanders 4-0

by NY Shutout on 3/6/25Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

IGOR!!! The Rangers had an absolutely phenomenal game against the Islanders with Igor Shesterkin recording a shutout. The Garden was electric, fans were on their feet, ain’t nothing like NYC.

  • Hugely enjoyable

by Albert 1er on 3/5/25Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Our first Ice Hockey match was a memorable night out. Comfortable Rangers victory. Fast game, lots of action, high skill levels. MSQ was great. Easy to access, excellent dining and merchandise options. We had hot dogs. Our seats were in section 215, with a great aerial view of the match. Atmosphere was incredible, fans fully engaged and some fun chanting. When the match finished we were quickly outside, and away. Staff always helpful. Thoroughly recommended, go Rangers !

  • Rangers game great but eat and drink somewhere else!

by Rip off for food and drink! on 3/5/25Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Really great. But they really rip off the fans for food and drink!

  • Exciting time at MSG. Great game and family experience.

by Gerald on 2/10/25Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 4 out of 5

Had a great time. Awesome experience and a wonderful family atmosphere. Game was exciting and the crowd was electric. I will say the food was pricey. It shouldn’t cost $27 for two hot dogs and water. Also do the tickets really have to costs hundreds of dollars each? While it is quite enjoyable it is beyond reach for a family of four (>$1,000).

  • What’s wrong with this team?!

by Richie Gee on 2/10/25Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 2 out of 5

The Rangers were almost completely un-interested in the game until the 3rd period and it was honestly too little too late to make up their one goal deficit. This team is better than the effort they are putting out most nights and they continue to lose to teams they should be beating easily. They’re going to need to wake up if they want to make the playoffs after the break.

  • THE WORLD'S GREATEST ARENA

by Arthur on 2/5/25Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Saw the Rangers play an excellent game and had a great time with my family at MSG, which is still The World's Greatest Arena.

  • Good Experience

by Pivete on 2/3/25Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 4 out of 5

It was a good experience, but Rangers lost to 0-4. But very easy to find the seat. The only cons that the seat is very small, my legs were uncomfortable the whole game.

  • Happy retired. old lady electrician zzzzzzž

by Rosie on 1/31/25Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 4 out of 5

I’m a disabled senior and a big Rangers fan my whole life. This trip was much easier with the Ticketmaster app. I messed it up last time. It made it difficult for me. This time when I got off the steps heading to the elevator there was a great guy there who offered me a ride in a wheelchair all the way to my seat because he saw I was struggling with my cane. I will always and forever be a New York Rangers fan and it’s treat like this in our whole organization that makes me never ever want to change that good service!, Very happy old lady. Can’t wait till next time❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ROSIE FROM JERSEY THANK YOU VERY MUCH

  • New York Rangers vs Carolina Hurricanes 1/28/2025

by Jrhat on 1/31/25Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 4 out of 5

I had BarStool seats in section 301. I wish they would’ve been labeled as “Obstructed View” because they were. I was also troubled that in order to purchase a Hot Dog, I had to travel to the opposite side of the arena because none of the concessions near me offered Hot Dogs( a staple at NYRanger hockey games). The team played poorly but that’s on them. Otherwise the experience was good.

  • Rangers are on a rebound.

by Caveman on 1/26/25Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Rangers are on a rebound, just hope its not too late. Madison Square Garden is showing it's age. Time for a new stadium New York!

  • Seating

by Rangers1969 on 1/24/25Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

I attended the Jan. 21 game against Ottawa. We sat in sec.215 row2. There were 4 of us and that's all that row held. The view of the ice was great with no one or nothing in our way. Great seats and a great game unless you ignore the 2 offsides that cost us 2 goals, but I guess 5 was enough anyway.

  • Great family event

by JBOD on 1/21/25Madison Square Garden - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

A fun time with the family and the Rangers won it in a shootout

Good seats, a little blocked from the jumbo screen.

Maddison Square Garden was nice. The game had no atmosphere. Great to watch some NHL level though.
