Edmonton Oilers History

The origin of the Oilers goes back to 1972, when they were one of the founding franchises of the World Hockey Association. Once the league folded in 1979, they were one of four teams absorbed into the National Hockey League. It didn't take long for them to establish dominance in the league, reeling off five Stanley Cup Championships in seven years. They are tied with the Pittsburgh Penguins for the most championships since the NHL-WHA merger.

The Oilers of the '80s were a phenomenal dynasty with a roster that reads like the Hockey Hall of Fame: Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier, Paul Coffey, Glenn Anderson, Grant Fuhr, Jari Kurri, plus a stellar supporting cast. Gretzky scored 92 goals in 1982, breaking Phil Esposito’s record for number of goals in a single season. He also recorded a record 215 points in 1985. During his time with the Oilers as center and team captain, Gretzky led the team to four Stanley Cup championships (1984, 1985, 1987, and 1988). By the time Gretzky finished his time with the Oilers, he held or shared a total of 49 NHL records.

In all, the Edmonton Oilers have appeared in the Stanley Cup Final eight times.

Edmonton Oilers at Rogers Place

NHL superstar Connor McDavid and NHL legends Wayne Gretzky and Mark Messier opened the doors to the spectacular Rogers Place in downtown Edmonton in October 2016. McDavid and his Edmonton Oilers bring excitement to Rogers Place nightly, with the statue of The Great One standing guard just outside. The state-of-the-art Rogers Place replaced the aging Rexall Place, and resulted in an explosion of business and residential growth in downtown's ICE District.

  • Good Overall Experience!

by Auddy on 5/15/25Rogers Place - EdmontonRating: 5 out of 5

Right from the entrance... security and ticket scan went smooth with friendly staff paying attention. With a full arena, there were plenty of attendents around to help you out and lineups for the (over priced of course) food and beverages were very doable. Rogers has honed in on problem areas and it's working pretty smoothly!

  • Oilers vs Avalanche

by Fan Bb on 2/10/25Rogers Place - EdmontonRating: 4 out of 5

Parked nearby and walked to Rogers Ice District for the game. Lineups were quick and friendly. Easy to find seats which are surprisingly comfortable. Bathrooms were easy to access without the horrible lineups the ladies often endure everywhere. Loved the Oilers brass band roaming the levels and then on their elevated stage! Hunter the mascot and all the staff are great. The game was fun to watch and the row of Colorado fans in front, leaned forwards making it harder to see over them. They were reminded once by staff but continued. Very expensive even for upper bowl tickets which is why it's been 3 decades since my last visit. Please make the games more family friendly affordable.

  • Enjoyable Experience

by Eri on 12/27/24Rogers Place - EdmontonRating: 4 out of 5

I've never been a hockey fan but recently started dating one. I watched a few videos on YouTube of Snoop Dogg explaining the rules to me the night before going to the game. Even with little knowledge of the sport, I had an awesome time. Being in the stands and the atmosphere/vibes from the fans and the music - it was an exciting and enjoyable night (especially after the Oilers won). Rogers place was big and there were a lot of places to buy drinks and snacks and the bathrooms were easily accessible. It didn't take too long to get through security too. I liked that they had 4 "No Bags - Express Lines"as well. The only reason for 4 stars is because of the price of literally everything. $30 for 2 cans of twisted teas and $300+ for a Jersey 😭 Our tickets were pretty pricey as well but I think that one is just to be expected these days (unfortunately).
