Anaheim Ducks History

What began as a 1992 Disney movie turned into a professional hockey team as the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim played their first official season in the NHL in 1993. With the emergence of Paul Kariya in late 1994, Anaheim had its first bona fide superstar.

In 1996, Teemu Selänne arrived via trade, and alongside Kariya helped lead the franchise to its first playoffs appearance in 1997. The Ducks reached the Stanley Cup Final in 2003, where they lost to the New Jersey Devils. Forever etched in Mighty Ducks lore was the knockout delivered upon Kariya by the Devils' Scott Stevens in game six. Kariya would make a hero's return in that game, emerging from the locker room to score and lead the team to victory. Netminder Jean-Sébastien Giguère won the Conn Smythe Trophy as the MVP of the playoffs, becoming the fifth player to win the trophy as a member of the losing team.

Disney sold the franchise to Henry and Susan Samueli in 2005, and the team dropped the "Mighty" from their moniker. With star players on the roster, including future Hall of Fame defensemen Chris Pronger and Scott Nidermayer, the Ducks finished the 2007 season as Stanley Cup Champions, defeating the Ottawa Senators in five games. With Rob Niedermayer also on the roster, the Niedermayers became the first set of brothers to win the Stanley Cup together since the 1980s. The Ducks have been in the playoffs a total of 14 times.

  • What happen?

The event and venue was great, as usual. Easy in, easy out, clean, nice people, etc. But the game!! Geez, what happen to this team? Why weren't they shooting? The Sharks out shot them at one point three times as much! 4 goals in just the first period? The Ducks looked sloppy, etc.

  • Hockey is back!

The seats were awesome. Section 433, right at center ice. Unfortunately the Ducks got clobbered.

Honda center is beautiful. A bit cold but it's understandable. Hockey players fought a lot! Overall... Great new experience for my group & I.

  • Ducks vs Kings (In Anaheim)

by KittyK on 10/2/09Honda Center - AnaheimRating: 4 out of 5

It was a good game with the score being really close. I was hoping for overtime, but it didn't happen. Of course, there was no fighting. I miss that. There was no giveaways. No T-shirts toss into the crowd during the intermission. I don't if it was because it was preseason that they didn't do giveaways, but at the Kings home game they were doing giveways and it was preseason. So, I don't know why the Ducks weren't doing it.

The game was great. It was exciting and gave us a good opportunity to see the teams new players. I missed seeing Hiller as goalee. He is super.

The Ducks game was fantastic! This was my 1st Hockey game in the 39 years. Great for a date as well! Seats were in a great location, even if they were close to he nosebleeds. I was able to catch just about all of the action happening on the ice. I will return to the Ponda again. :)
